Jung Most Dedicated Fencer Voting; Due Date for Banquet RSVP

Please, download the Jung Most Dedicated Fencer ballot. Vote for one boy and one girl.  The completed ballot should be returned to Mrs. Dunnick in Room 126 by the close of school on Friday, March 11.  Thank you to MHSFPA Co-President Kris Swanson for producing the ballot.

RSVPs and checks for Mendham High School Fencing 2011 Awards Banquet tickets are, also, due Friday, March 11.  The deadline for ordering tix is a hard deadline.  Places cannot be held without checks and orders cannot be taken after the deadline because of Meadow Wood Manor's lead time that they need to make the event really nice.

Picture Day Rescheduled

Mendham High School Fencing picture day has been rescheduled.

Please, report to the school cafeteria at 3 pm on Monday, Dec. 6.

All fencers should be in their whites, with team socks and a patch properly affixed to your whites. See a coach if you have questions about patch placement, which is weapon-specific.

Pictures will be taken of the team captains, boys' team, girls' team, squad leaders and captains and a group shot of the graduating seniors.  Individual portraits of each senior will, also, be taken. Please, make every effort to be dressed and in the cafeteria on time.

E-vite Sent to Mendham HS Fencing Parents

The Mendham High School Fencing Parents' Association has sent all parents an email invitation to the annual, pre-season social on Friday evening, November 19.

Please, answer the invitation as soon as possible. 

 

New Fencing Parents' Orientation

New fencing parents will be welcomed to the Mendham HS Fencing program this evening, October 27, at 7pm, in Room 139 of the high school with a Fencing_101 slide show led by Coach Tishman.

All parents are welcome, but the presentation is aimed at parents new to the program, who will be interested in the coaching staff's expectations of the student-athletes, the time commitment for fencers in the program and the cost commitment for parents who have fencers in the program. 

In addition, we will go over the six(6) pieces of paperwork every fencer must complete before the season starts.

Parents' Association October Meeting

Winter Sports Meeting for Fencing Teams

The organizational meeting for the boys' and girls' fencing teams will be jointly held on Tuesday, October 19, at 11:10am-11:30am, in the large group area in the freshman wing.  All the forms that must be completed by fencers will be available at the meeting.  Coaches Tishman and Dunnick will hand out the forms and discuss the practice schedule by weapon.

The due date for approval of physical exams, activity fee collection and submission of all documentation is the Wednesday, November 24, the day before Thanksgiving.  No forms will be accepted after that date.  There will be no exceptions granted.  Get started on the process now.

Key Upcoming Events - 2010 Mum Sale and First MHSFPA Meeting

The Mendham High School Fencing Teams run a mum sale every August-September.  The sale has grown so large that our clients wait for us, rather than buy them directly, knowing that we are coming with great mums from Stony Hill Gardens.  Each and every fencer is required to participate in this necessary fund raising event.  The net proceeds go towards buying team electrical equipment, uniforms, tournament entry fees, refereeing and specialized, outside coaching. Order forms and instructions will be sent out in the next couple of days, so get ready to sell sell sell!

The next Fencing Parents' Association meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 13 at 7 pm at the Chester Library.

Please join us as we discuss next season's FPA leadership (many positions are available) and the critical fundraisers coming up next month. Fundraising is a higher priority than ever because of the district's proposed budget cuts! Please come to this meeting to help ensure these events are successful.

Awards Banquet

The Mendham High School Fencing Awards Banquet will be held tonight, Thursday, March 25, at Meadow Wood Manor located at 461 Route 10 in Randolph.  It is on the eastbound side between Center Grove Road and Millbrook Avenue. The proceedings will begin promptly at 7:00pm. 

Jung Most Dedicated Fencer Awards

The Jung Most Dedicated Fencer Awards, which are voted on by the fencers themselves, are named to honor Jeanette and Henry Jung, parents' of Boys' Team Captain Andy Jung. 

Download the Jung Most Dedicated Fencer Awards ballot and return it to Mrs. Dunnick in Room 126 on Tuesday afternoon, March 16, between lunch and 3:00pm.  The results will be announced a week from Thursday at the Mendham HS Fencing Awards Banquet.

Voting for Next Season's Captains

The big snowstorm over the last two days before the Squad States' weekend put a crimp in our plans to vote for next season's captains during the pizza party.  Therefore, the process is going to be a little different this year. Please read the following instructions very carefully.

Download "What is a Captain? and voting ballot. The first page of the ballot is courtesy of the Montgomery High School Fencing program. Please, read what the qualities are you should be looking for in your next set of captains. Then, print out the 2nd page ballot, PRINT the names of one girl and one boy.  Hand the ballot to Mrs. Dunnick in Room 126.  The voting is open only from after lunch on Friday, March 12, until when Mrs. Dunnick goes home on Friday.  No ballots will be accepted before or after this voting window.

The results, as always, will be announced at the Mendham High School Fencing Awards Banquet on Thursday evening, March 25. Since we are holding the banquet at an outside catering establishment for the first time, please note that this Friday evening, March 12, is the hard deadline for notifying Ms. Julie Wallace of your intention to attend.  No tickets can be purchased after that time.

MHSFPA-Sponsored Pizza Party Friday Night -- CANCELLED :(

All fencers are invited to attend our final pizza party of the season after practice this Friday, Feb. 25. Let's show our support for the girls' squads and the boys' foil squad, who will be competing this weekend in the NJSIAA State Squad Championships!

MHSFPA Update: Annual Banquet Confirmed, Next Parent Meeting Date

Please mark your calendars - the team banquet is confirmed for Thursday, March 25, at 7pm. It will be held at Meadow Wood Manor in Randolph.  Invitations will be emailed over the next couple of weeks and will include all the details.  We can assure you the price will be very reasonable. 

We have a few decisions to make regarding the banquet, so please join us for the next FPA meeting, to be held on Tuesday, February 9 at 7pm in Room 138(note room change) at the high school. The agenda will be published to the blog a few days before this meeting.

MHSFPA Updates: Minutes from Meeting, Important Dates

Also, a few important post-meeting updates:

• Save the date: Our carwash, chaired by Marjorie Hsu, Kris Swanson and Karen Blanc, will be held on Saturday, May 15. All fencers are expected to take a shift at this fun event and we will need parent support, too. Sign ups will be taken at the fencing banquet.
• Senior Send-Off: The annual "send-off" for our senior fencers will take place at 11:45 a.m. at the last home meet vs. Bernards on Saturday, Feb. 6. For new families, this is a tradition where Coach Tishman reviews the accomplishments of our seniors. It's a very moving tribute and a special event  - be sure to join us to cheer them on as they prepare to fence in their final meet in our home gym!

• Jacket Update: Our jacket order will be in our hands in two weeks. The delay was unavoidable; please accept our apologies. We will have them in hand for the last few meets of the season. Fortunately, they are perfect spring-weather jackets so we’ll expect to see the Mark of Mendham all over town even after the season ends. Thank you for your patience!

• Banquet Update: Cecelia Donato has stepped up to chair this year's banquet. Our tentative date is Thursday, March 25. The committee is reviewing options for having this year's banquet off-site, which may require a date change so stay tuned. If you have ideas or would like to help with this year's planning, please contact Cecelia directly ASAP.

• Pizza Party Before Districts: This event, chaired by Mimi Western and Gina Bruno, is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29 right after practice. Please reply to the email you received yesterday to volunteer or donate!

• Fitness trainer Angelo Scarpati from Optimal Therapy and Performance will begin his training on Friday, December 11, 5pm.

Voting and New Parents' Meeting

If you're a new fencing parent, you have two important things to do on Tuesday, November 3.  You need to vote in the general election for governor from 6am until 8pm AND attend the new parents meeting at the High School in Room 139 at 7pm.  Here's where you can vote.

Fencing 101

The coaching staff of the Boys' and Girls' Fencing Teams and the Mendham HS Fencing Parents' Association will present "Fencing 101" on Tuesday evening, November 3, 2009, in Room 139 of the High School, at 7:00pm. This seminar is designed for new fencers and their parents.  Returning fencers and their parents are, of course, welcome.

We will discuss costs; practice, regular season and tournament schedules; and coaching staff expectations for fencers.  Here is the  final regular season schedule from Athletic Director Baglin.

Presentation by Professional Fitness Trainer

This Tuesday's Mendham HS Fencing Parents' Association meeting will weigh a proposal by Angelo Scarpati of Optimal Physical Therapy & Performance Institute to provide your kids with about half a dozen sessions of physical training.  The cost will be similiar to that which we pay for group fencing training by Morris Fencing Club. Mr. Scarpati's services are used by several teams at Bernards and Ridge High Schools. In addition, he is a fitness instructor with the Titliest Performance Institute.

Fencing Organizational Meeting Scheduled

The in-school organizational meeting for student-athletes wishing to compete on the Mendham High School Boys' and Girls' Fencing Teams this coming winter season will be held on Wednesday, October 14, at 11:10am, which is the second half of lunch.  It will be held in Mrs. Dunnick's Room 126. 

Copies of all four(4) forms that student-athletes must submit are available on this weblog at the top of the left-hand column.  Schedule your physical exams immediately because no late forms will be accepted.

Update on the Sprague Family & Key Dates

Andrew Sprague and his family have asked that we pass along the message that they are moving to Paris on a three-year assignment and, regretfully, will no longer be participating in the Mendham High School Fencing program.     Although this move is an exciting opportunity for the Spragues, they are sad to be leaving our own family of wonderful fencers, coaches and parents. Andrew has thoroughly enjoyed his fencing experience and will miss his teammates very much.   I'm sad to say this also means that Lynne will be stepping down as co-president of the FPA. Although our tenure together was brief, I will miss her enthusiasm, commitment and the grace and thoughtfulness with which she approached her responsibilities. If you are interested in signing on as co-president, please let me know by Aug. 15.    Take a moment to note 3 key dates that are quickly approaching:   1. Tuesday, September 8 - We are working with the captains and AFC in Randolph to organize the 2nd annual pre-season captains' pizza party and open fencing. This was a huge success last year. This is not officially confirmed yet but please tentatively save the date and watch for details.   2. Saturday, September 12 - MHSFPA Car Wash at the high school. Watch for details from chairperson Michelle Dabal soon!   3. Wednesday, September 23 - 1st MHSFPA meeting of the new school year, 7 pm at the high school, room 139.   Thanks and enjoy the rest of your summer!

MHSFPA Monthly Meeting on Wednesday, 5/27 & Equipment Policy - Parent Review

The monthly MHSFPA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27 at 7 pm at the Chester Library. This is our last meeting before the summer break so please attend! We will be reviewing a significant change to the way fencers borrow team equipment for next season. This is your chance to comment! Athletes' Study Hall Phys Ed Option

At its March 16 school board meeting, the policy committee of the WM Regional HS District Board of Ed proposed a new policy endorsed by the Superintendent to offer athletes in their junior and senior years the option to attend study hall instead of physical education during one quarter per school year.  Several phys ed teachers attending the meeting spoke in opposition to the proposal.  Undecided, the board will consider and vote on the policy at its next meeting.  

Last June, school board member Jamie Button proposed an expanded version modeled after the Ridge HS program.  Accordingly, on March 30, he will move to amend the committee's proposal to include all underclassmen and extend the study hall option for the duration of each athlete's sports season(s).

The board will vote on this policy at its meetin on Monday, MArch 30, at 7:00pm in the WM Central HS library after listening to public comment.  Please come to be heard by the Board of Education on this issue, which is important for our student-athletess. 

Awards Banquet on March 26 & Other Dates

The 5th annual Mendham HS Fencing Awards Banquet will be held in the MHS Cafe on Thursday, March 26 starting at 6:30pm. Fencers are needed to stay immediately after school to help with set up and decorations from 3:00 pm to 4:30.

 

All equipment belonging to Mendham HS must be returned on the day of banquet. There is quite a bit of equipment still in the possession of athletes and not in the equipment cabinets.

AD Baglin to Address PTO

The Parent Teacher Organization will host Athletic Director Baglin at its meeting on Monday, March 23, in the Mendham HS library beginning at 7:00pm. 

Among the topics AD Baglin will be addressing are:

• NJSIAA approval of conference changes for next season

• Use and scheduling of the new turf field

• New teams, e.g., swimming

• Summer camps at Mendham HS

This is a great opportunity to meet Mr. Baglin and have your questions answered.

Voting for Most Dedicated Fencer is Open

The 5th annual Mendham HS Fencing Awards Banquet will be held in the MHS Cafe on Thursday, March 26, starting at 6:30pm.

The Parents' Open House will be held on Thursday, March 5, 7:00pm at Doyle's resident  in Mendham. The FPA is vital to the teams' continue success. Our teams need continuous support of the new parents as the graduating class parents move on. Please plan to attend this important event for our fencers. RVSP to Jeanette Jung.

Pizza Party is scheduled on Friday, February 27, 5:00pm immediate after practice. Pick up time will be 6:30pm.
